Accessible Media Inc. is an industry leader that offers accessible, empowering, and informative content made by and for Canadians with disabilities.
It should go without saying, but every single person deserves to feel represented in the media they’re consuming. Diversity can empower marginalized communities and reshape the way people think about one another. It has the power to generate understanding, familiarity, and even empathy.
What’s more, media should be accessible to all. Going beyond entertainment, modern media is also about connection and staying culturally relevant. Everyone deserves to be a part of the conversation whether they’re blind, partially sighted, or living with any other disability.
Thanks to rapidly advancing technology, there are more ways than ever to develop and present accessible content. In Canada, Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) continues to trailblaze in this industry. It’s the company’s mission to make media that’s accessible to everybody.
Paving the way
AMI generates original, relevant content that gives a voice to the disability community through truthful storytelling, positive portrayal, and representation. Its shows can be found across three broadcasting services: AMI-tv, AMI-audio in English, and AMI-télé in French, as well as its online streaming platform, AMI+. There, users have tons of customizable options to suit their personal preferences, making it totally accessible.
Prioritizing inclusion, AMI boasts over 100 hours of documentaries, television shows, original podcasts, and live audio broadcasts that cover a range of topics. Steven Scott is the co-host of Double Tap, a AMI-audio podcast that offers news, reviews and technology stories of interest to people who are members of the blind, partially sighted and disability community. “AMI gives us a platform and lets us tell our stories our way,” he says. “We have real conversations about what it’s like to live with blindness that establish a sense of connection with others who are blind or partially sighted. These conversations also help to break down preconceived notions.”
Available online 24/7
On weekdays at 2 p.m. EDT on AMI-audio, catch Kelly & Company for interviews and discussions about lifestyle, entertainment, arts, and the issues that matter most. “We speak from our unique perspectives as people with disabilities,” says co-host Ramya Amuthan. “And we cover challenging but important topics that may impact us differently, like mental health and wellness.”
AMI’s 2024-2025 production slate is filled with authentic stories about the disability community in Canada. Keep an eye out for new AMI-tv shows including The Crip Trip, Get Hooked, We Were Broncos, Underdog Inc.,and the children’s program Collar of Duty Kids.
“Having representation is so important, and we’re trying to improve society’s conversation surrounding disability,” says Amuthan. “If you have a disability and you want to hear from people like you or you’re looking for a community you can identify with, AMI should be your go-to resource.”
