Gaseous Fuels for a Clean Energy World

As the world looks for ways to affordably and reliably meet growing energy demand while reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, gaseous energy will play an increasingly important role in developed and emerging economies. A snapshot of the opportunities is outlined below.

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

RNG is natural gas that is produced from organic waste sources such as farms, forests, landfills and wastewater treatment plants. The methane that would otherwise go into the atmosphere is captured, cleaned, and then injected into pipelines to be used in the same way as conventional natural gas. This makes it an excellent component of any circular economy.

The advantage of RNG is that when blended into the natural gas system, no adjustments are needed to the infrastructure of end-use equipment making it a seamless fuel substitution.

LNG — Serving domestic and international communities

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) can play a variety of important roles both domestically and abroad. Here in Canada, LNG has been used to support peak gas demand needs, transportation customers, off-pipe industrial clients and remote communities in their aim to transition off higher polluting fuels like diesel and propane. We can also take LNG’s benefits to the world, to strengthen global energy security and reduce emissions. Canada’s LNG supply is amongst the cleanest in the world and it can be shared globally to support other countries and their energy needs.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the simplest and most abundant element in the universe. It is often called an “energy carrier” because it is produced from sources of energy and then used to store or deliver energy.

Natural gas is an input energy to create through steam methane reformation combined with CCUS. The industry is currently working to launch the project in Canada to blend hydrogen into the gas system and distribute it through its extensive energy infrastructure.

Hydrogen does not emit any carbon when combusted, making it very attractive as a part of the pathway to reaching net-zero goals.
