Apprenticeship is more than training. It’s a proven workforce development strategy that helps build Canada’s future workforce.
Canada’s economic future depends on its ability to develop, attract, and retain skilled talent. As governments and industry work to address housing shortages, build critical infrastructure, strengthen supply chains, and support economic growth, one workforce development solution continues to demonstrate its value: apprenticeship.
The challenge before us is significant. Across sectors, employers are facing an aging workforce, increasing retirements, and persistent recruitment challenges. At the same time, demand for skilled workers continues to grow. Whether the focus is residential construction, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, transportation, or industrial maintenance, Canada’s ability to deliver on major economic priorities depends on having enough qualified people with the right skills in the workforce.
A highly effective workforce development strategy
Apprenticeship offers a practical and proven response.
Too often, apprenticeship is viewed solely as an education or training pathway. In reality, it’s one of Canada’s most effective workforce development strategies. It connects employers directly to talent, allows individuals to earn while they learn, and creates a sustainable pipeline of skilled workers who gain experience in the workplace from day one.
For employers, apprenticeship is an investment in long-term workforce stability. It supports succession planning, knowledge transfer, and employee retention while helping organizations develop the skills they need for their specific operations. For apprentices, it provides a clear pathway to rewarding careers that offer meaningful opportunities for growth, mobility, and economic security.
Success, however, requires more than individual employer commitment.
Creating pathways into apprenticeship
Addressing Canada’s workforce challenges demands collaboration across sectors and jurisdictions. Governments, employers, labour organizations, training institutions, industry associations, and community organizations all play critical roles in creating pathways into apprenticeship and supporting apprentice success. Strong partnerships help reduce barriers to participation, expand opportunities for underrepresented groups, and ensure apprenticeship systems remain responsive to evolving labour market needs.
The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum works with partners across the country to strengthen apprenticeship systems, share promising practices, support research, and create opportunities for collaboration. By bringing together employers, industry leaders, governments, labour organizations, and training providers, we help advance solutions that strengthen Canada’s skilled trades workforce.
Canada has made important progress in recent years, but the work is far from complete. As we look to build the workforce required for the future, apprenticeship must be recognized not simply as a training model, but as a strategic workforce development tool that drives economic growth, supports employers, and creates opportunities for Canadians.
